Des joined ResortBrokers in 2014, after moving from a farming background into management rights in Townsville. Life on the land had demanded dedication and resourcefulness, often against seemingly unbeatable odds.
There is always an element in the primary production of not knowing what might be around the corner, he says. Being prepared to handle the unexpected is a skill he finds valuable in the accommodation sector.
“My experience in life has taught me to overcome challenges and to always do your best to succeed.”
Des has a successful record selling motels, management rights and caravan parks across a wide area of North Queensland, from Townsville to Mackay and west to Mt Isa. He has worked closely with vendors and buyers through both challenging and positive market cycles, from the mining downturn to the upturn in Queensland’s tourism economy.
Regardless of current market circumstances, he says, the fundamentals of achieving a successful sale remain constant: having a strong set financial statements to work with, and service-focused broker who keeps clients constantly informed.
“Stringent lending policies mean purchasers have to go to their financial institution with verified financial statements to underpin the strength of the investment,” he stressed. “Communication is also extremely important for both sellers and buyers, to ensure they feel well informed at all times as to how the transaction process is ticking along.”
Des is confident about the future of North Queensland in both the accommodation sector and on the wider economic front. “I really enjoy talking with people throughout my region. When I see people succeed in their business ventures, it gives me great satisfaction to know that ResortBrokers has been a part of that.”
